This summer has been and continues to be very abnormal, with both high temperatures and high heat index. While working outside both at work and at home, be sure to stay hydrated. Keep a close eye on your crews and look out for signs of dehydration.  Symptoms include redness, incoherence, excessive sweating or no sweating at all, lack of ability to concentrate and rapid heartbeat.

Dehydration is a very dangerous situation that can lead to hospitalization. Getting inside or into a shaded area and applying cold compresses can help.

Also, be aware that children are out of school and may be out in the streets near our work zones.  Always have a spotter when backing up. Try to close down the portion of the street you are working on and use your vehicles for blockers.

At night be sure to have your emergency lights, four ways, and running lights on all of your equipment. We need to give the public every opportunity to see us. Even then, they may not be paying attention.

There is still more summer to go so take some time to spend with family and friends. This is what we work for!  Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Know your job.  Do your job.  Always watch out for each other. -Fran Capozzi, Gas Safety Advocate, IBEW Local 97 Central Division
